Turn on 2-Step Verification for your Google or Gmail account

For: Google or Gmail account on any device

2-Step Verification adds a second lock to your Google Account, which covers Gmail, YouTube, Google Photos and more.

This page is for you if

  • You want to make your Gmail harder to break into
  • Google keeps suggesting extra security

Why this happens

With 2-Step Verification, a stolen password isn't enough. Google also checks a second thing, like a prompt on your phone.

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Open your Google Account

Go to myaccount.google.com and sign in.

  2. Step 2: Tap Security & sign-in

Tap or click Security & sign-in.

  3. Step 3: Turn it on

Under How you sign in to Google, choose Turn on 2-Step Verification.

  4. Step 4: Follow the steps

Follow what the screen says. Google suggests Google prompts: a message on your phone where you tap Yes if it's you and No if it isn't.

Someone is asking for your code?

  • Google says never share your verification codes with anyone. Google won't call you to check a code.
  • If you got a Google prompt and you weren't signing in, tap No.

Good to know

  • Print or write down your backup codes and keep them somewhere safe at home. They get you in if you lose your phone.
  • On a computer only you use, you can tick Don't ask again on this computer.
