A strange or junk email in Gmail. Here's what to do.

For: Gmail on a computer

Last checked October 14, 2026 against official help from Google. Written for Gmail on the web, October 2026.

Gmail catches most junk, but some gets through. Reporting it helps Gmail block more next time.

This page is for you if

  • An email asks you to click a link, pay or sign in
  • Your inbox is full of junk
  • A friend's email looks strange or asks for money

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Don't click or reply

Don't open links or attachments in an email you're not sure about. Don't reply.

  2. Step 2: Select the email

Open Gmail on your computer. Tick the box next to the email.

  3. Step 3: Report spam

At the top, click Report spam. Gmail moves it to Spam and learns to catch more like it.

  4. Step 4: Empty the Spam folder

On the left, click More, then Spam. At the top, click Delete all spam messages now.

Spam from someone you know?

  • Google says this usually means a hacker took over their account. Don't answer it.
  • Call or text your friend at the number you already have and tell them. They can follow our hacked account steps.

Good to know

  • Google says it won't ask for personal information over email.
  • If Gmail shows a warning on an email, don't reply or open links until you're sure who sent it.
  • If something went to Spam by mistake, open Spam, tick the email, and click Not spam.
