Windows updates fix security holes and bugs. Here's how to check for them and install them yourself.

This page is for you if

  • Your computer says updates are ready
  • Someone told you to update Windows
  • Your computer is acting up and hasn't been updated in a while

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Open Settings

Click the Start button, then click Settings.

  2. Step 2: Open Windows Update

    Click Windows Update.

  3. Step 3: Check for updates

    Click Check for Windows updates.

  4. Step 4: Install

If updates are there, click Download & install.

  5. Step 5: Restart if it asks

Save your work and close your programs. If Windows asks you to restart, let it. Keep the computer plugged in until it's done.

Good to know

  • Still on Windows 10? Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Microsoft's update page links to what that means for you.
  • Never install an update from a pop-up on a website. Real Windows updates come from Settings.
