How to update a Mac

For: Mac computer

Last checked October 14, 2026 against official help from Apple. Written for macOS 27 (System Settings).

Updating your Mac keeps it safe and fixes bugs. It can take a while, so start when you don't need the computer for an hour.

This page is for you if

  • A message says a macOS update is available
  • An app says your Mac software is too old

Before you start

Apple says to back up your Mac before you update. If you're not sure your Mac is backed up, ask someone you trust to help you check first.

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Open System Settings

Click the Apple menu. It's the apple in the top-left corner of the screen. Choose System Settings.

  2. Step 2: Go to Software Update

Click General on the left, then click Software Update on the right.

  3. Step 3: Install it

If an update is there, click the button to install it. If nothing shows, click Check for Updates.

  4. Step 4: Type your password

Your Mac asks for an administrator password. That's the password you type to log in to your Mac.

  5. Step 5: Let it finish

Don't put the Mac to sleep or close the lid. It may restart and show a progress bar or a blank screen several times. That's normal.

Good to know

  • Plug in a laptop before you start so it doesn't run out of power.

Check it with the source

We wrote these steps from these official pages. If your screen looks different, the official page is always right.
