Connect your iPhone to your car
Connecting your iPhone to the car lets you make hands-free calls and hear maps and music through the car speakers. You set it up once.
This page is for you if
- The car won't connect to your phone
- You got a new phone or a new car
- Calls or music don't come through the car speakers
Good to know first
Do this while the car is parked. Every car's screen is different, so keep the car's manual handy. If your car has CarPlay, use the first steps. If it doesn't, use the Bluetooth steps after them.
Do these steps
-
Step 1: Start the car
Start your car. On your iPhone, make sure Siri is turned on. CarPlay needs it.
-
Step 2: Plug in your iPhone
If the car has a USB port marked with a CarPlay or phone picture, plug your iPhone in with an Apple USB cable. CarPlay should show up on the car's screen.
-
Step 3: Or connect without a cable
If your car has wireless CarPlay, press and hold the voice button on the steering wheel. Or put the car's stereo in Bluetooth pairing mode. Then on your iPhone, open Settings, tap General, then CarPlay, and pick your car.
-
Step 4: Open CarPlay
If CarPlay doesn't open on its own, select the CarPlay logo on the car's screen.
If your car doesn't have CarPlay, use Bluetooth
-
Step 1: Start pairing on the car
Most cars ask you to add a phone on the car's screen or stereo. The car's manual has the exact steps.
-
Step 2: Turn on Bluetooth
On your iPhone, open Settings and tap Bluetooth. Turn it on.
-
Step 3: Tap the car
Tap the car's name when it shows up. If a number appears on both screens, check that it matches and accept it.
Good to know
- If it won't connect, restart your iPhone. Then go to Settings, Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth off, wait about 5 seconds and turn it back on.
- If other phones have connected to the same car, give your iPhone its own name. Go to Settings, General, About, Name, type a new name, then try again.
- Update your iPhone. The car may need a software update too. The car's dealer or maker can help with that.
