Back up your iPhone or iPad with iCloud

For: iPhone or iPad

Last checked October 14, 2026 against official help from Apple. Written for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27.

A backup is a copy of your device kept safe in iCloud. If your phone is lost or broken, you can get your things back.

This page is for you if

  • You're worried about losing your photos
  • You're getting a new phone
  • Someone told you to back up before an update

Do these steps

  1. Step 1: Connect to Wi-Fi

Make sure your iPhone or iPad is on Wi-Fi.

  2. Step 2: Open iCloud settings

Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud.

  3. Step 3: Tap iCloud Backup

    Tap iCloud Backup.

  4. Step 4: Back up now

Tap Back Up Now. Stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes. The date and time of your last backup shows under the button.

  5. Step 5: Turn on automatic backups

On the same screen, make sure Back Up This iPhone (or iPad) is on. It backs up by itself when it's charging, locked and on Wi-Fi.

Good to know

  • If it says there isn't enough iCloud storage, follow the steps on the screen to buy more iCloud storage, or ask someone you trust to help you decide.

We wrote these steps from these official pages. If your screen looks different, the official page is always right.
