How we picked, and how we're paid

Every price and plan below comes from the company's own pricing or help page, linked under each plan. We haven't tested these assistants against each other, and we don't rank them on how smart they are. We sort the plans by what an older parent is likely to use.

We earn nothing from these links right now. If we ever add paid or affiliate links, we'll label each one where it appears.

All four big AI helpers have a free version, and most parents never need more. The prices below come from each company's own pricing page.

Which one does a parent actually need?

  • Most parents need nothing paid. Start with what their phone already has: Siri on a recent iPhone, or the free Gemini app on Android.
  • Has Prime and an Echo? Alexa+ is already included. Say "Alexa, upgrade to Alexa+" or sign in at Alexa.com.
  • Wants to type questions or send a photo of a confusing letter? ChatGPT Free or Gemini Free. Pay only if they keep hitting the limits.
  • Google storage full? Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month adds 400 GB, which may matter more than the AI.
  • Never type passwords, codes, bank numbers or a Social Security number into any AI chat. Check health and money answers with a doctor, pharmacist or the bank.
  • Scammers copy AI apps and websites. Get the app from the App Store or Google Play, and see our guide to spotting fake websites.
